The name means witness

I renamed it. As of this week the product is Vitni, not Mune. Vitni is Norwegian for witness.

The honest reason it changed, first, because starting anywhere else would be a small lie. Another company already had the word Mune. Same year, same markets I'm building toward, a domain and a trademark I'd never actually secured. I'd been treating the name like something I owned. I was renting it. When I looked closely, the lease was thin.

So the name was a forced move. What I didn't expect is that the forced move was the better one.

Here is what I kept circling. Most of what you think never gets seen. You have the thought at 2 AM, half-write it in your phone, delete it before morning. It happened, and no one witnessed it. Not even you, not really.

Watching and witnessing are not the same thing. Watching is what the other apps do: a camera on your behavior, counting, scoring, selling the count. Witnessing asks for nothing back. It just lets the thing have happened. Something seen, allowed to stand, no verdict attached.

And the witness here is you. What you write is encrypted on your device before it leaves it, so we can't read your conversations and no one is standing behind you while you type. You witness your own thinking, then decide what it was worth. That is the whole product in one word, which is more than the old name ever managed.

There is a thread back to where I started, too. The name I'd been chasing before all this pointed at memory, the raven that remembered. Vitni points at the act instead of the record. Not what you kept, but that you saw it happen.

I know the word carries a faint courtroom in English. A witness stand, a hand on a book. I'll spend a while keeping it pinned to the smaller meaning, the private one, because a witness is not a judge. That distinction is most of why I chose it.
