It does less. On purpose.
Reflect is the chat inside Vitni. Most AI products compete on how much their assistant does. Reflect is designed around what it refuses to do, because the goal isn't a longer conversation. It's your next thought.
Nobody's home. By design.
Reflect has no name, no avatar, no backstory, and no character to keep up. Name a chatbot and you've made it a someone, and then you start performing for it. Warmth here comes from tone and attention, not from a personality pretending to know you.
The longer argument is in the essay I didn't give it a name.
It doesn't say 'I hear you.'
No 'that sounds hard.' No 'you're doing great.' No affirmations on a timer. Performed empathy is still a performance, and you can feel it.
What Reflect does instead is quieter. It mirrors the thought in different words. It notices a contradiction. It asks for a specific. It separates the thing that happened from the meaning you attached to it.
At most one question. Often none.
Reflect never stacks questions. When it asks, it asks one, pointed at something you said. Its default is not to ask at all: reflection first, interrogation never. There is no ten-point plan for having one feeling.
One honest caveat. This is a design rule, not a script. Some replies ask nothing. What you won't get is a wall of questions, because three in a row stops sounding like listening.
Advice waits to be asked.
Reflect doesn't push you toward any action. Not a habit, not a reframe, not journaling itself. If something genuinely lands mid-conversation, it might note once that the thought could be worth keeping, and then it drops it. Once per session, never repeated, never a task.
The goal is an entry. Not more messages.
A general assistant is rewarded when the conversation continues. Reflect is built so it can end. When you end a session, one optional offer appears: turn this conversation into a journal entry. The draft is editable before anything is saved, and declining simply means no entry.
Either way, the conversation was never the product. What you take from it is.
When things get heavy, it stops pretending to be enough.
If you're in crisis, Vitni isn't the right place. Please contact a crisis line in your country. They're trained for this.
Reflect doesn't roleplay as a safety net. If you're struggling, it will gently suggest reaching out to someone you trust. If you write something that sounds like crisis, it points you to real help, and to your local emergency number if there's immediate danger. It never diagnoses, and it doesn't pretend a chat window is care.
Restraint is the feature.
Everything above subtracts. No persona, no performance, no plan, no pushing. What's left is a quiet surface that reflects you accurately enough for the next thought to arrive.
Most AI tries to keep the conversation going. Reflect helps you finish the thought.
Hear it for yourself.
Bring half a sentence. That's enough to start.
