Vitni is a private, end-to-end encrypted journal with an AI chat built in. The chat, called Reflect in the product, helps you turn a half-formed thought into a journal entry. You talk, it reflects back what it heard, and when something lands it can draft an entry you edit and keep. Everything you keep is encrypted on your device before it leaves it.

Vitni is Old Norse for witness, the older form of the Norwegian vitne. The name is about witnessing your own thinking, not about giving testimony in court. Watching is what other apps do. Witnessing asks for nothing back, and the witness is you, because what you keep is encrypted on your device before it leaves.

Yes. Vitni was called Mune until July 2026, when another company turned out to hold that word. Same product, same founder, same architecture. Essays published before the rename still say Mune, and each one carries a note explaining that.

It ends in a journal, but it doesn't start with a blank page. A journaling app gives you an empty text field and a date. Vitni gives you a conversation, and the conversation writes the first draft of the entry. You can still write entries from scratch on a clean page whenever you want. The difference is that you never have to.

They share a text box and not much else. ChatGPT is a general assistant built to produce answers. Vitni is a deliberately narrow space for private reflection and journal writing. Reflect doesn't solve tasks, doesn't produce content for you, and doesn't try to keep you chatting. It helps you hear your own thought, then helps you keep it.

No. The AI has no name, no avatar, no persona, and no backstory. Warmth comes from tone, not from a character pretending to know you. Nobody at Vitni named it, and nobody will.

Not by default. Reflect mirrors what you said, notices contradictions, and asks for specifics. It doesn't hand you a ten-step plan for having one feeling, and it doesn't push you toward any action, including journaling. The goal is your next thought, not its opinion.

You type what's on your mind, in whatever shape it arrives. Reflect reads it and does one of two things: reflects back what it heard in different words, or asks one question pointed at something you said. It asks at most one question at a time, and often none. When the thought has found its shape, it stops.

Yes. Manual entries are a clean page: a title, your text, no template, no mood picker, no prompts. Entries written this way are encrypted on your device and never touch the AI at all.

Yes, all of them, with AES-256-GCM, in your browser, before anything is sent. The server stores ciphertext plus the pieces needed to decrypt it later on your device: IVs, salts, wrapped keys. It never stores your passphrase or anything that can open an entry.

No. There's no master key and no admin view. Entries you write by hand never leave your device unencrypted at all. Entries you write with AI assistance pass through the AI provider while you're working on them, then are stored encrypted like everything else. If someone stole the database, they'd get locked boxes they can't open.

Two things, on two paths. For storage, your chat history is encrypted on your device and the server holds ciphertext. For the reply, the message you send crosses to Anthropic, the AI provider, in the clear over an encrypted connection, with no name, email, or IP attached. Anthropic doesn't train on it and deletes it under their standard retention window of up to 30 days.

Nothing about the chat is wiped when a session ends. Your encrypted copy persists so you can come back to it, and so a past conversation can still become a journal entry later.

Your 24-word recovery phrase unlocks your data and makes you set a new passphrase. If you lose both the passphrase and the recovery phrase, your data is gone. Nobody at Vitni can reset either one, because a reset that could would be a back door.

No. Vitni isn't therapy, doesn't replace it, and won't pretend to. If you're in crisis, Vitni isn't the right place. Please contact a crisis line in your country. They're trained for this.

What Vitni is for is the space between sessions, or the time before you're ready for them. No diagnosis, no treatment, no clinical anything.

Yes, while it's in public beta. No card, no trial that expires mid-thought. The longer plan is free at the core, paid for what scales. What will never pay for it: ads, or your data.

There's an iOS app in beta, with the same account and the same encryption. The web app at vitni.app is the main door in today, and it works in a phone browser.
